Michael Forbes

Co-founder and CEO

Michael is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of WEEDWORKS, and fulfills the role as Quality Assurance Officer. Michael was named one of 2017’s Top Entrepreneurs by Quantum Shift, and is both a medical professional and a dynamic entrepreneur. He attended the University of British Columbia on scholarships, graduating in 2002 with a BSc. in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Michael has also obtained certification in Hormone Restoration, Regenerative Medicine, and an Honorary MBA from the Ivey School of Business.

Michael is also the founder and owner of  Clarity Cannabis a retail cannabis company focused in BC and parts of Alberta.  He currently has 44 retail licenses in various states of approval, across 3 provinces in Western Canada.  Michael also serves as Chief Operating Officer and voting director of Choom Holdings Inc., a publicly traded company on the Canadian Securities Exchange.

Michael has a proven track record of creating and operating successful companies. Over the course of 15 years, he has created and operated a chain of compounding pharmacies throughout British Columbia and Alberta, and eight medical clinics, employing over 250 people.

His expertise led to him being nominated to help create the procedures for the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia in 2010. Creating standard operating procedures in the pharmaceutical space is vital in ensuring proper drug dispensing to the public and his experience has been crucial in creating trust with the consumer and the industry at large.

Ian Laing

Co-founder and COO

Ian is the co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of WEEDWORKS, having successfully led the application, zoning, and full construction of the Company’s Sooke, BC processing facility, which was approved by Health Canada as a Licensed Producer of Cannabis in 2018.

Ian has had a focus on cannabis opportunities over the last 5+ years having founded and owned a number of BC municipally-licenced cannabis retail locations and now has several BC cannabis retail license applications submitted with the BC Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch in various stages of approval (some now approved).

Over the last 21 years Ian has specialized in real estate development, zoning, and construction with projects ranging from custom homes to subdivisions, breweries, hotels, apartments, and other commercial and industrial buildings. His projects have culminated in many hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of transactions. Prior to that, Ian attended the University of Victoria and University of British Columbia, majoring in Urban Land Economics.

Since 1998, Ian has consistently proven his ability to build and grow multi-million dollar projects from the ground up. Whether he’s renovating a heritage building or developing a condominium, Ian’s boots are on the ground from conception to completion, and his dedication and passion for his work is unmistakable.

Stuart Leith

Quality Assurance

Stuart Leith is the Quality Assurance Manager at WEEDWORKS. Stuart has spent the last 2 years working in the cannabis industry as the General Manager and QAP of Evergreen Medicinal Supply Inc. He amassed over 29 years of Quality Assurance and Operational experience in the food and beverage industry. Stuart served as the lead QA / HACCP Manager of Thrifty Kitchens (Thrifty Foods) for 9 years, he held positions of various responsibilities for companies such as Devro Canada (Johnson & Johnson), T.J. Lipton (Unilever Canada), Sparkling Spring Water Company Ltd, ClearWater Ltd and FreshXtend Technologies.

John Henney

Legal Advisor

John Heaney brings over 20 years of combined experience in private legal practice, government counsel, and public service. Most recently, John was the Chief of Staff for the Government of Alberta, where his role was paramount to ensuring the government was in touch with the needs and wants of Albertans. John has been a key official in developing the Alberta government’s energy royalty review and climate-change legislation. He also worked at several law firms in British Columbia, most notably as a lawyer at Heenan Blaikie LLP.
